Yard Waste Rules

REMAINING YARD WASTE COLLECTION DATES FOR 2010:

STARTING ON MONDAYS: JULY 12, 2010; AUGUST 9, 2010; SEPTEMBER 13, 2010; OCTOBER 11 & OCTOBER 25, 2010; NOVEMBER 15, 2010.

These guidelines must be followed in order for your yard waste to be picked up:

  1. All yard waste should be out on the scheduled Monday by 6:00 a.m. for collection.  Collection will continue through that week until all areas of the Town have been covered.  Once they have picked up your neighborhood, they will not return until the scheduled pickup date.
  2. Leaves, grass clippings, garden debris, and small twigs should be placed loosely in a hard garbage container with handles.  The container must not exceed 30 gallons in size.  The container and the contents must not exceed 50 pounds.  You may also use biodegradable brown paper bags from Menards, Lowes, Home Depot, or any hardware store, etc.
  3. DO NOT USE PLASTIC BAGS OF ANY KIND! They will not pick up plastic bags containing yard waste.
  4. BRUSH should be tied securely in bundles no greater than three-feet in length and no greater than two-feet in diameter.  Large tree branches/stumps or clumps of dirt will not be accepted.
  5. Set yard waste on the opposite side of your driveway, away from your regular garbage and/or recyclables.
  6. If you should have any questions, please call Veolia Waste Services at 1-800-279-1930 or the Town Hall at 734-8599.

If the Monday we have scheduled for pick-up does not work, your other options are to burn the yard waste (you will need to obtain a burning permit at our Town Hall office) or dispose of the waste at the Outagamie County Landfill for a fee.  The landfill is located on the corner of Holland Road and Highway 00, east of Hwy. 441.  The City of Appleton and Town of Harrison will not allow you to dump at their sites since you are not a resident.

Noxious Weed Notice To Property Owners

Notice is hereby given to each person who owns, occupies, or controls land in the Town of Buchanan, to destroy all noxious weeds on such property before the plants bloom.  The noxious weeds are: Canada Thistle, Leafy Spurge, and Field Bindweed (Creeping Jenny) per Wisconsin Statutes 66.0407.  Our town ordinance 34-1(a) also states that you must cut or remove the accumulation of brush, weeds or grass which has grown to a height greater than twelve (12) inches.

Vacant Lots & Ditches - No Illegal Dumping Is Allowed

Please do not treat vacant lots or ditches as dumping grounds.  Dumping anything including grass clippings, rocks, stones or concrete, etc. in the ditches or on vacant land is prohibited.

Soil Testing

Did you know that you may be wasting time and money by adding unnecessary nutrients to your yard?  Do a soil test first and learn what your lawn really needs.  Many lawns have sufficient nutrients (such a phosphorus) already and do not need these nutrients added through a fertilizer.  Soil tests supply information about the nutrients in your soil and can tell you when applications are no longer needed.  Soil tests can prevent over fertilizing which can save money and protect area waters by limiting excess nutrients in storm water runoff.  For more information regarding soil testing, contact your local UW-Extension office.
